Overview

After a year with a fairly basic shaver, I finally reached the point where I wanted an upgrade. Something that would feel noticeably better in the hand, glide more easily across my skin, and still cut cleanly and safely without irritation. Easy cleaning and fast charging were high on the list too.

The Philips Norelco Shaver 5000X caught my attention at the right moment. It was relatively new to the lineup and priced reasonably enough that I decided to just go for it.

So, am I happy with the purchase? Let's find out.

Product description

Brand
Philips
Model No.
Norelco 5000X Series (X5004/84, X5006/85)
Type
Electric Rotary Shaver

The Philips Norelco 5000X Series is an electric rotary shaver built for face and neck shaving. The shaving head is fully flexible and rotates 360°, designed to maintain contact with the skin's contours in harder-to-reach areas.

The shaving head uses a SkinGlide protective coating, which according to the manufacturer improves gliding across the skin to help reduce irritation. The head housing itself is made from hypoallergenic steel with an anti-corrosion system.

Cutting is handled by self-sharpening ComfortCut blades made from stainless steel, paired with a click-on precision trimmer accessory for detail work like sideburns and mustache edges.

The shaver is rechargeable, with a fast-charge option available for quick top-ups when time is short. It charges via an included USB-A cable, though a wall power adapter is not included in the box.

Pros

Materials And Build Quality The shaver feels solid and well put together, with a housing that holds up well to daily use.

Shaving Experience It feels noticeably better on the face compared to a basic shaver.Try a cheap shaver and a premium one side by side and the difference becomes obvious.

USB Charging Charging over USB is a welcome change from older shavers that rely on a bulky power brick, making it much easier to charge anywhere.

Waterproof The shaver can be used and rinsed under running water without any issue, making cleaning fast and keeping it working reliably afterward.

Cons

Large Size It is noticeably bigger than simpler, older shavers, which can make it feel bulkier to hold and travel with.

Overall Price This is not a cheap model, and there are other shavers that will get the job done for less money. It is worth waiting for a sale if you're considering buying it.

Overall Verdict

The Philips Norelco Shaver 5000X delivers exactly what I was hoping to upgrade to: a noticeably more comfortable shave than my previous basic model, a build that feels solid in the hand, and blades that glide with less effort while still cutting cleanly. USB charging and easy cleaning make it simple to live with day to day, and the fact that it's fully waterproof means I can rinse it under the tap without a second thought.

It's not cheap, but it depends what you're comparing it to. There are cheaper alternatives out there for half the price or less. I used a pretty basic shaver for about a year, and I knew it was basic. It wasn't a bad shaver, but stepping up to the 5000X, you can feel the difference: it's a genuinely well-built product, the kind of quality I'd expect from Philips.

On the other hand, there are shavers that cost two, three, even five times as much, with extra features like Bluetooth that could push the shave even further. So it's all relative. But as a quality shaver at a reasonable price, this one delivers.

If you can, it's worth waiting for a sale. There are at least two throughout the year.

The Bottom Line

A genuine step up from a basic shaver, comfortable, well-built, and easy to live with day to day. It costs more than entry-level models, so it's worth grabbing during a sale, but as a quality shaver at a reasonable price, I'm happy with this purchase.

FAQ

Which replacement blades does it use?
The 5000X Series uses the SH30 replacement head. According to the manufacturer, it's recommended to replace it about every 2 years to keep the shave quality consistent.
Is it suitable for shaving a bald head?
Yes. Several viewers have reported using it daily for head shaving with great results, noting that the flexible heads feel comfortable and contour well to the scalp.
Does the trimmer attachment fit in the travel case?
The travel pouch included with most versions has enough room for the shaver along with the click-on precision trimmer, so you can keep both together when traveling. Note that some regional versions of this shaver do not include a travel pouch.
How do I avoid skin irritation?
Use small circular motions with light pressure rather than pressing the shaver firmly against the skin. Pressing too hard is the most common cause of redness and irritation with rotary shavers.
