IKEA SANDSBERG Compact Bar Table 67x67 cm, Black
Overview
I was looking for a tall table that works for both standing and sitting, and combines compactness with functionality for a range of uses: filming and working on my content, sitting down with the laptop, eating comfortably, or setting it up in a corner of my enclosed balcony to sit or stand facing the view. Stability was important to me, but so was being able to move it easily between the different rooms of the house. Then I came across this table. On the surface it is very basic, but it fits that description almost perfectly.
So I went to IKEA, bought the IKEA SANDSBERG bar table, assembled it, and in this review I'm going to tell you everything about it, including how to upgrade it.

The IKEA SANDSBERG bar table is a square, bar-height table with a black 67x67 cm table top that is 2 cm thick, standing on a black steel underframe with a height of 90 cm. It is made of two separate IKEA parts: the SANDSBERG table top (604.129.89) and the SANDSBERG underframe for table top (505.145.06). The table is assembled at home using the hardware and tools that come with the underframe.
The table top is made of particleboard with melamine foil and plastic edging. The underframe is steel with an epoxy/polyester powder coating and has polypropylene feet. According to IKEA, the table top is recommended for indoor use only.
Compared with the standard-height SANDSBERG frame, this taller underframe includes additional H-shaped reinforcement bars, as shown in IKEA's assembly instructions.

Pros
Attractive priceThe price was very attractive to begin with, and even more so during IKEA's twice-yearly sales.
Highly functionalIt suits a wide range of uses, including as a corner or central table, for eating, writing, on an enclosed balcony, in the living room or in a home office.
Easy to moveIt is not heavy to begin with, so it is easy to move around.
Very stableIt sits well, does not move around for no reason and can carry a fairly reasonable load.Provided it is assembled properly and placed on a flat, non-slippery surface.
Modern designThe SANDSBERG series is defined by minimal materials (a square wood-based top and a metal tube frame) and a black color, which turn a seemingly banal design into one that fits a variety of uses. I bought the tall version, which makes it a good fit for standing or bar use. As simple as it is, it looks great, and different chairs each give it a different touch.
Easy to upgradeI added wheels that fit onto the legs and made the table mobile. Finding the right solution took some effort, but that is the beauty of it, and the same approach works for furniture in general and IKEA products in particular.
Cons
Top can get scratchedIt is best to put a tablecloth on the top, otherwise the surface can get scratched.
Functional, but could be even betterIt is very functional, but it could be even better: it does not fold, has no built-in wheels and cannot be raised or lowered. Some of this can be solved (I bought the wheels separately), and the height can be changed by swapping the metal frame for another product in the SANDSBERG series. But this takes some thinking outside the box, extra expense, or simply finding another solution.
Overall Verdict
The IKEA SANDSBERG bar table is a great product at an attractive price, and it is very functional. Personally, I think it belongs to the kind of products that are excellent as long as you have a real use and need for them, and in that case I say go for it.
If you are not specifically looking for a raised table, this version of the SANDSBERG series is less relevant for you. But if you do want a tall table, it is very versatile, stable yet easy to move around, and it can be upgraded in a variety of ways, which in my eyes makes it a great piece of furniture.
A stable, versatile and easy-to-move bar table at an attractive price, and an excellent choice if you specifically want a tall table.
