Overview

Historically, original Nespresso capsules have been priced higher than most other capsules on the market. So whenever I'm buying capsules, that price gap usually pushes me toward looking for a more cost-effective alternative.

There's a real difference between capsules that are just cheap and capsules that are a genuinely better deal. Cheap capsules usually mean a worse coffee experience overall. A better deal means good value on price, but also on taste and quality, without dragging the experience down. Those are the ones I'd actually choose. The question is where to find them.

That question led me back to Carrefour, a chain I shop at often, where their own private label, Selection, offers a decent range of coffee, both beans and Nespresso-compatible capsules, at a noticeably lower price.

Generally speaking, the price is reasonable, and every once in a while they run sales that make the capsules even more attractive.

Looking at the packaging alone, the capsules are eye-catching, and in terms of variety there seems to be a solid selection. But what really matters is the actual coffee experience once you open the pack, pop a capsule into the machine, and brew it.

So I decided to buy every type of capsule the brand offered (out of what was available at the time of this review) and put them to the test, so I could share with you whether they're worth the money or better skipped.

Notes

โ€ข As far as I know, the capsules are manufactured abroad, and I'd like to believe that's a standard that applies across every country where Carrefour products are sold โ€“ so this review should be relevant to branches on the other side of the world too (or at least wherever the chain is active).
โ€ข If I get the chance to taste and test additional capsules down the line, I'll update this post with that information.

What Stood Out

The price is good, and the quality feels solid relative to non-premium Nespresso-compatible capsules โ€“ both in taste and in the capsule itself, which doesn't feel cheap the way capsules made from flimsier material sometimes do.

That starts with the packaging, which has clearly had some design thought put into it, and continues with a capsule that doesn't feel like cheap coffee was pushed into a cheap shell. The result is a coffee experience that comes across as relatively good overall.

There's also a very large variety of flavors and intensities to choose from, and availability is relatively high โ€“ that depends on where you live, of course, but there are a lot more physical branches to buy from than Nespresso's own stores, and buying online is an option too.

Worth noting: a 40-capsule pack is available, though not for every flavor โ€“ specifically for the Espresso Savoroso.

Overall Verdict

I was pleasantly surprised by these capsules. I think they're not bad at all.

They don't have the prestige of Nespresso, Starbucks, or other well known coffee brands. But as capsules in general, and especially compared to cheap capsules, they hold up well.

I've also noticed that over time, the quality hasn't dropped, and that's something I really appreciate about them.

I usually buy capsules for guests who prefer regular coffee or capsules over espresso from beans, as a backup at home for whenever I run out of coffee beans, when I'm trying out a new machine, or simply when a new flavor catches my eye and I want to give it a try.

These capsules won't make me give up on coffee beans, but they're solid in their own right, and they make a worthy choice for the situations I mentioned.

FAQ

Are these capsules compatible with Nespresso machines?

Yes โ€“ these capsules are compatible with Nespresso espresso machines.

Please note that these are classic Nespresso-format capsules, not Nespresso Vertuo pods, so they won't work in a Vertuo machine.
