Is Watermelon Safe for Rabbits?
Yes – rabbits can eat watermelon. The red flesh is safe as an occasional treat, as long as it’s offered in small amounts.
Seeds and rind should be avoided, as they are difficult to digest and may cause gastrointestinal discomfort.
Because watermelon is high in sugar and water, it should never replace a rabbit’s essential diet of hay, leafy greens and pellets — that’s the core of a healthy rabbit diet.
The video below shows the OVR Bunny, my beloved pet rabbit, sitting comfortably on my lap and enjoying a juicy slice of fresh watermelon.
My Experience Feeding Watermelon to My Rabbit
As you can see from the video above, my rabbit really enjoys eating watermelon.
When I first offered it to him, he wasn’t sure what to do – but very quickly he learned to recognize it as a treat. I never force food on him; I simply offer, and if he wants it, he takes it.
Over time I’ve noticed a few things that may help other rabbit owners:
Use only fresh watermelon slices.
Offer a small piece occasionally – this should never replace hay, leafy greens, or pellets.
Don’t leave watermelon out for too long; remove leftovers to avoid flies, bacteria, or mess.
Feeding by hand while your rabbit sits on your lap can be a great bonding experience.
Some rabbits can get a little pushy with foods they love. Mine will sometimes try to take a bite straight from me, which is cute – but it’s important to set boundaries so it doesn’t turn into bad habits.
