Captain Marvel (Movie Review)

Summary

When a movie that is anticipated and hyped as “Captain Marvel” hits the screens, you get to hear lots of “noises” generated by “good souls” that prevent from you realizing if this is a movie worth watching.

But I just got back from the cinema after watching it and want the share with you my verdict!

Let's start from the bottom line

Captain Marvel is a decent movie and a respectable addition to the Marvel Universe.

Based on my emotions during & right after watching the movie, I wouldn’t rank “Captain Marvel” among my top 3 or even top 5 Marvel Universe movies of all time.

And yet, “Captain Marvel” offers an easy-to-process script that is well-written for this kind of genre.

A respectful and not too-cheesy tribute was paid to Stan Lee, and I was impressed to see young kids mumbling about him while it was showing on the screen.

The action scenes were good, but not that exciting or memorable. Several action scenes were too dark, so I couldn’t understand what was happening on the screen.

For some reason, the whole movie I felt that Captain Marvel wasn’t getting into “Full throttle” mode, and probably the production did that because Captain Marvel saved something for her appearance in the upcoming “Avengers: Endgame“.

There weren’t any real surprises or steep turns in the plot, though there are several incidents and revelations during the movie that change what we think about some of the characters.

In my opinion, the casting was excellent and the actors fitted exactly into their characters, so the whole thing was reliable, most importantly – None of the actors, especially not Brie Larson, generated any sort of antagonism like some people try to portray in the media/online (e.g. – In the “Avengers” movies series, I felt that Scarlett Johansson’s role is pushed because of politicly correct/gender wars, that made her character bigger than it should be).

There were great expectations from the actress who would play Captain Marvel, and Brie Larson deserves a lot of credit for doing a great job. But on top of that, it is Marvel’s vision and established universe that made her life very easy.

Many people compare Captain Marvel to Wonder Woman – I think that Marvel’s movie is by far a better product in every aspect than DC’s top female hero character.

What frightened me the most was the excessive use of messages that are related to #MeToo/Girl Power agendas that will take over the storyline and overshadow the movie’s plot.

Gladly, this wasn’t the case, and if someone intended to do so, then it was done elegantly. As someone who respects women and believes in equality between genders, I would gladly accept messages that are served in such a way – If “Captain Marvel”‘s plot suffered from such an agenda that was shoved into my throat, then this whole review would sound different.

As for the comic relief in “Captain Marvel” – If Marvel movies make you laugh, then you probably will laugh here too. The dose of jokes isn’t as intense as in other Marvel movies (at least until when Samuel L. Jackson finds the cat..), but that’s because Captain Marvel takes herself more seriously than let’s say, Thor…

Surprisingly, Samuel L. Jackson’s character is involved in many comic scenes, which isn’t aligned with his character up till now in the Marvel Universe movies he appeared.

You could settle this claim by saying that he is younger (and less familiar with the events that will occur chronologically from this movie and so on in his career as Nick Fury), but still, I think that if the guy took things so easily during “Captain Marvel”, then it’s a shame he didn’t keep this sense of humor in the upcoming movies…

People who lived during the ’90s and remember those years well will probably laugh during the movie, while the younger generation probably won’t understand what the fuzz is all about. For instance, when I watched the movie, it had a scene showing “Radio Shack” and I was the only person in the movie theater that was laughing…

The soundtrack of “Captain Marvel” included many familiar songs from the ’90s. On one hand, it was a musical cliché, but the choice of songs delivered well the atmosphere of the ’90s.

Speaking of the movie’s ability to relive the atmosphere of the ’90s, I think the production/art/graphic design/makeup artists/whoever was in charge of the looks of the movie, did a brilliant job.

The best thing about “Captain Marvel” is that it has a direct correlation to the upcoming “Avengers: Endgame”, which adds to the “importance” of this movie.

Since “Avengers: Endgame” will be released on April 26th, 2019, assuming you plan to watch it, then you should consider watching Captain Marvel as well…

And that’s a good enough reason to watch “Captain Marvel”.

Let me know what you think of “Captain Marvel” and the things I wrote about this movie.
