Heidelberg Inn Resort in June Lake, California

Overview

In September 2018, during a coast to coast road trip across the US, we found ourselves heading toward Yosemite National Park and in need of a place to stay nearby for a few days. We settled on the Heidelberg Inn Resort in June Lake, a historic, 1930s Alpine style inn nestled right in the heart of the village. Three people, two nights, and this charming, German inspired lodge became our basecamp for the entire visit.

Having never been to this part of the country before, I honestly didn't know what to expect. It's hard to gauge what constitutes a "good standard" for accommodations in an area you're completely unfamiliar with, so I simply came in with an open mind.

Pros

The viewThe resort faces a mesmerizing mountain view. You can enjoy it while sitting in the hot tub or doing BBQ, and rooms facing that direction enjoy it too.

PeacefulnessSome of it is the area itself, and some is because the place wasn't fully booked during my visit, but you'll likely find it anyway. The rooms are spacious, with several spots to sit quietly and relax without being bothered.

All year relevanceThe resort is a great place to stay whether you come during the winter to ski, or during the warmer seasons to fish, hike, or get a tan. It offers amenities suited to those activities, like a fishing cleaning room and ski lockers.

Distance from Yosemite National ParkThere are closer accommodation alternatives to Yosemite, but a 30 minute drive isn't bad, especially since the other places I considered were in the same area.

Kind staffI didn't have much interaction with them, but they were informative and kind, and explained to me about things to do in the area, including giving me a map.

Cleanliness and maintenanceThough this resort is in a rural area that isn't that modern, it's clean and well maintained. This applies to the room, which was fully equipped with everything I needed, the peaceful and warm lobby, and the rest of the amenities.

The small perksIt might be obvious that perks and amenities should be included for what you pay, but because it's not a big place, things like the veggie platter and cold water with lemonade offered for free, or everything available in my room, show a sincere effort to offer a positive experience.

Free parking spaceYou'll probably arrive with a car, so it's good to know where you can park it.

Wi-Fi works wellWorked fast, with no disconnections.

Laundry roomThe place offers a laundry room, which was very useful.

PriceI checked several accommodation types for this area, and I think the Heidelberg Inn offers an attractive price compared to most of them, especially other resorts.

Cons

Bed and pillow comfortabilityNot that bad, but could be more comfortable than it actually looks.

Not all rooms have the same viewRooms facing the back won't enjoy the same view as I had.

Limited culinary optionsThe resort itself doesn't have a restaurant, and the nearby area has limited options, so it's best to check with staff in advance about where to buy food to cook in the room or eat outside.

No elevator to the second floorPeople with disabilities will have to settle for a room on the 1st floor, since there are only regular stairs.

The spa/sauna wasn't active during my visitI'm not sure if there was only a sauna room or more than that, but it wasn't active during my stay so I can't opine on it.

Overall Verdict

Going in without much of a benchmark for what "good" looks like in this part of the country, the Heidelberg Inn Resort ended up being a pleasant surprise for a short family stopover near Yosemite.

The mountain view from the hot tub, the peaceful setting, and the kind, helpful staff carried most of the experience, backed up by a clean, well maintained property and a condo that had everything we needed for a couple of nights. The small perks (the free parking, the working Wi-Fi, the laundry room, the little touches like the veggie platter and lemonade) added up to a place that felt like real effort went into it, especially for its size.

It's not without its rough edges: the bed could be more comfortable, the culinary options nearby are limited, and there's no elevator for anyone who'd struggle with stairs to the second floor. None of that changed my overall impression, though, and as the only place we stayed at during our whole Yosemite visit, it did its job well.

The Bottom Line

An inviting yet quiet place with kind staff, fully equipped condos, good maintenance, and an amazing mountain view from the hot tub.

FAQ

What is the ranking of this resort?
According to Booking.com, this is a 3-star hotel (or equivalent). According to Wikipedia, "A 3-Star hotel has more spacious rooms and adds high-class decorations and furnishings and color TV. It also offers one or more bars or lounges".
Does this resort offer a spa?
There was a sauna located beneath the BBQ area shown in the video, but it wasn't available during my stay, so I couldn't form a solid impression of it and preferred not to focus on it in my review. Although I love this kind of amenity, in this case it didn't affect my overall opinion of the resort.
