Overview

I wanted to find out whether the Nespresso Essenza Mini could deliver the same coffee quality and experience as the larger, more expensive Nespresso models, while taking up significantly less counter space.

I've been using the machine for six months before writing this, so this is a long-term take rather than a first impression.

The Essenza Mini is Nespresso's compact original-line machine, sold in different shapes and colors, the model I reviewed here is the Ruby Red version, also known as the Nespresso D30.

According to the manufacturer, it draws about 1150 watts and reaches up to 19 bar of pump pressure, with a fast heat-up system.

The water tank holds 0.6 liters, and the used capsule container fits up to 6 capsules. The machine measures roughly 84 x 330 x 204 mm and weighs about 2.3 kg. It also includes a programmable auto power-off, set to 9 minutes by default.

Pros

Compact Measurements The main justification for the Essenza Mini's existence is a compact espresso machine, a la iPod mini, and Nespresso did marvelous work on this specific aspect.

Build Quality Though this machine is smaller than other espresso machines, it's made from the same materials and gives the same sturdy feeling.

Price I was worried that the compact size and hype around this machine would come with a "less is more" premium, but that's not the case, it's currently one of the most affordable Nespresso machines.

Nespresso Coffee Standards Like the rest of the Nespresso lineup, the Essenza Mini keeps what I'd describe as the "Nespresso Experience", the trendiness and the coffee quality both included.

Cons

Maintenance Due to its compact measurements, you'll have to fill the water tank and empty the capsule container more often.

Using Tall Glasses Even with the drip tray removed, you'll struggle to fit tall glasses under the coffee outlet. Placing the machine on a higher surface can work around this.

Overall Verdict

After six months with it, I'm satisfied with the Essenza Mini. It's an excellent, high-quality, and cost-effective choice for anyone who wants the full Nespresso experience in a space-saving footprint.

The only real tradeoff is more frequent maintenance, the small water tank and capsule container mean more regular refilling and emptying, but if that doesn't bother you, this machine delivers.

The Bottom Line

A high-quality, affordable Nespresso machine that saves serious counter space, as long as you don't mind refilling it more often.

FAQ

Does this machine offer the same espresso quality as other Nespresso machines?
Yes, the Essenza Mini keeps the same coffee standards as the rest of the coffee machines by Nespresso.
What is the capacity of the water tank?
The water tank's capacity is 0.6 liter.
How many used capsules can the capsule container hold?
The capsule container is suitable for up to 6 capsules (maybe 7 if you're fortunate).
Is there a difference between the triangular and the rectangular versions of the Essenza Mini?
You can get this machine in different shapes and colors, but they're identical in every aspect. The only thing I can think of is that the rectangular version might hold 1-2 more capsules due to its more practical shape, but again, it depends on how the capsules fall into the container and doesn't make a big difference anyway.

[…] I love how the Citiz look. It is slim but everything is in the right size (capsules container, water tank, drip tray) and my the overall feeling is that it can fit into places that other Nespresso machines this size won’t fit (excluding the smaller Nespresso Essenza Mini). […]
