Summary:

Easy to operate & carry, great luminance, limited outdoor use, tungsten light isn’t built-in

The brand: Neewer
The model: 18″ / 48 cm / 55W / 240 LED SMD / 5,500K / 10084598

I was intrigued to purchase a LED ring light since I’m working with all sorts of illumination solutions to produce my content. I wanted to see what’s all the fuzz about LED rings that can be used for various purposes and are very popular among YouTubers and beauticians.

The Neewer 18” LED ring light by came inside a cardboard box that included:

  • A large protective carry bag with 2 different compartments.
  • An adapter with two different plugs – US and European.
  • Plastic filters in 2 different colors: white and orange. Each filter includes 4 parts, and it’s not too complicated to place them, just make sure you place first the piece with this rounded curve that fits exactly to the lower part of the ring light.
  • A “thank you” card from the manufacturer.

The ring light weighs approx. 8.16 pounds (3.7 kg) and its outer diameter is 18″ (48 cm), so it’s convenient to carry. The body is made from plastic, and the rounded SMD LED module consists of 240 white LED units that consume 55 watts per hour and generates a color temperature of 5,500 Kelvin units (also known as “daylight”).

Inside the ring, there’s a “hot shoe” bracket and two holes, so it allows you to connect it to external devices and mounts.

The power switch is located at the bottom of the ring light, and it also operates as a dimmer that determines the level of the illumination.

Since this is a LED light, it doesn’t generate heat while you stand next to it or face it, but the illumination can be blinding if you’re not used to it or set it too high.

The LED ring light has an adjustable base that you can rotate in 2 different places using these heavy-duty thumbscrews to set it in various positions.

The base will fit a standard stand, and if you don’t have one, you probably should consider getting yourself a tripod stand.

Although there are more affordable illumination solutions compared to LED ring lights if you’ll decide to get yourself a LED ring light – This one is among the more affordable 18” LED ring lights that are currently available in the market. You’ll probably be satisfied with this LED ring if you consider yourself as the potential user (which I mentioned above).

Its benefits are that it is easy to carry & operate, it doesn’t generate noise when it is on and the illumination it makes that should satisfy most of its potential users.

The disadvantages are the absence of a digital display & external batteries.

I guess that many potential users would prefer a LED ring with a built-in tungsten illumination over placing the orange filter manually on this one.

The pros:

Weight – I was surprised to learn this LED ring doesn’t weight too much. It comes with a comfortable carry bag, so it is convenient to take it with you.

Easy to operate – One switch to control the LED, placing the plastic filters (and remove them) is a simple task once you realize how to set it properly.

Doesn’t generate noise – The LED ring was very quiet while I used it. It doesn’t have any rotors inside (which do exist in the old generation LED, which I’m still using sometimes).

Impressive illumination – I was surprised by the overall output of this LED ring, so I believe that the light it generates will satisfy most of its potential users.

The cons:

Simple control – One analog switch emphasizes the simplicity of this LED ring, but it can be annoying when you wish to dim the light since it’s hard to repeat to the same setup quickly once you turn it off.

No digital display – a digital screen could solve the problem from the previous paragraph, and give more indication about the operation of this LED ring.

No external batteries – You must use the power adapter, which makes it less suitable for outdoor productions.

No built-in tungsten illumination – Before making this video review, I spoke with people who showed interest in this LED ring. The majority were very disappointed when I mentioned it has plastic white/orange filters, rather than a built-in daylight/tungsten illumination.

Price – It’s not a cheap light solution, and there are more reasonable alternatives to that (though they aren’t necessarily coming in a ring shape).
